Study of the recognised readings beyond Hafs — how they differ, where those differences come from, and how to recite them without confusing one with another.

Who is this course for?

Reciters already secure in Hafs, usually with an Ijazah or working towards one.

What you will learn

  • How the readings differ in sound, madd and occasionally wording
  • The narrators behind each reading and their chains
  • Reciting a second reading cleanly, without drifting back to Hafs
  • Where the differences carry a difference in meaning

Course curriculum

  1. Assessment of Hafs recitation, which must be secure first
  2. The usool of the chosen reading and its characteristic features
  3. Guided recitation with constant comparison to Hafs
  4. The farsh: the individual words that differ
  5. Sustained recitation in the new reading

What you get at the end

A written progress report each month, shared with the parent or student.

Questions about this course

Which readings do you teach?
Most commonly Warsh and Qalun from Nafi, and Ad-Duri. Ask the coordinator which are currently available.
Must I finish Hafs Ijazah first?
Not always, but your Hafs must be stable. Learning a second reading over an unsteady first one tends to damage both.
